Smokes to Get you through the Big Game

This Sunday marks the big matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs to determine who will be crowned NFL Champions.  This game has transcended a simple athletic competition and evolved into an almost holiday-like event.  People have viewing parties, bars and restaurants offer specials, and no one wants to work the next day.

As a cigar smoker, this is a great opportunity to enjoy some good smokes throughout the game.  In between quarters and stuffing your mouth with buffalo chicken dip, relaxing outside with a good beer, a nice cigar will only add to your viewing experience.  With that in mind, here is a list of great cigars to smoke for the big game and when you should light them up.

Ashton VSG Tres Mystique- End of 1st Quarter

The Ashton VSG is one of my all-time favorite cigars.  Crafted by the Fuente family for Ashton, it uses a combination of the finest aged Dominican tobaccos available, along with a dark and rich Ecuadorian sun-grown wrapper.  It offers notes of pepper, rich leather, and nutmeg combined for one of the finest full-bodied cigars you’ll ever smoke.

The small Tres Mystique is perfect to enjoy right after the first quarter.  Go aside, light up your smoke while you check out your betting pool and boxes — this quick smoke will be great to lead you into the next quarter.

Muestra de Saka #NLMTHA- Halftime

I’ll be honest, I hate the half-time show.  I usually put it on mute or change the channel to some sports station to hear updates or commentary on the game.  That being said, it’s a great time to enjoy a little longer smoke.  It can’t be too long because you don’t want to waste something great, so I feel like this lancer is a perfect size.

The Muestra de Saka is a special release from Steve Saka that uses different blends for each size.  After several customer requests to make a lancer size, Steve made one and decided to name it “Now Leave Me The Hell Alone”.  It has become one of his most sought after cigars, both for its blend performance and rarity.  This is much better than watching a 20-minute concert.

AJ Fernandez Last Call Maduro- End of 3rd Quarter

This cigar was actually created for this exact purpose.  When AJ would have friends over his house to watch football, he created a blend to enjoy for the last quarter and appropriately named it the Last Call.  It is available in two different wrapper options, but obviously, I am going with the broadleaf Maduro version.

This rich and bold smoke is great after eating all those appetizers and having your favorite drinks.  It is smooth, sweet and rich, and is the perfect size to get you through the end of the game.

Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua- After the Game

There is going to be a winner and a loser.  Either your team is holding up the trophy or sobbing on the sidelines.  You either just won a good amount of money or have to explain to your wife where the rainy day fund went.  Either way, you deserve an extra special smoke.  I’d reach for the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua.

This exquisite smoke was blended by Rafael Nodal and AJ Fernandez, using Nicaraguan tobacco’s for a rich, bold, yet smooth cigar.  It was named the #1 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado, so at least someone will feel like a winner at the end of the night.
