Henry Clay – A Brief History, And a Great NEW Cigar!

January 28, 2016

The Cuban tobacco magnate Julian Alvarez, first created the Henry Clay Cigar brand in the 1840s. Named for the famous American politician by the same name, these cigars, made in Old Havana, were one of the most popular in the 19th century United States (even Rudyard Kipling wrote about them).

Today, these timeless smokes are crafted by the legendary Altadis USA company in both the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

The first premium Henry Clay Cigar fashioned outside of Cuba is a rugged old school looking stick with high-quality Dominican long-filler tobaccos and finished with a rustic and not so pretty- looking, licorice black Connecticut broadleaf maduro wrapper. While not winning any beauty contests, this medium to full bodied smoke delivers plenty of beauty from within. With its intense, yet refined earth and spice flavors, this affordable cigar was always in great demand. Especially the Henry Clay Breva, a 5.5 × 42 corona considered the most highly regarded in the line.

Several years later, the Henry Clay Honduran Cigars were introduced to the public. The brand was fashioned at the famed Flor de Copán factory, with the intention of bringing a more polished look and modern edge to this classic smoke. The artisans at this factory expertly handcrafted this beauty with a recipe of Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Peruvian long-filler leaf, finished with a lush and luxurious reddish-hue Cuban-seed Rosado EMS wrapper. Its rich, refined flavors of nuts, spice, leather, and cocoa quickly catapulted this new offering to the top of the charts.

For many years, these two cousins sat side by side on store shelves, and inside thousands of humidors, until the latest and possibly the best, Henry Clay cigar was unleashed in 2015.

The new Henry Clay Stalk Cut Cigars were the brainchild of the all-star blending team known as the Grupo de Maestros at the renowned Tabacalera de Garcia in the Dominican Republic. This lovely smoke returns to a bygone method of cigar constructing called stalk cutting, an old process whereby the entire tobacco plant is cut at the base, then hung by its stalk to cure in a barn. This procedure brings out all of the tobaccos natural sugars and nutrients to impart a richer and earthier flavor profile.

Full-bodied and vibrantly robust; this exquisite blend contains all vintage tobaccos. A 2010 Vintage Dominican Piloto binder, and a filler consisting of 2012 Vintage Dominican Olor, 2012 Vintage Dominican Piloto, and 2013 Vintage Nicaraguan Criollo, rest inside a top-quality 2012 vintage Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. Years in the planning this sumptuous stick delivers mouthwatering notes of dark chocolate, coffee bean, leather, spice, and a warm, well fermented naturally sweet tobacco aroma.

If you’ve passed them by before, it’s time to take a good look at our whole lineup of top-quality Henry Clay Cigars and find the perfect size and blend to compliment your taste and smoking style.
