My Father Buying Guide

June 25, 2020

Over the past decade, Don Pepin Garcia has come to be seen as one of the premier blenders in the cigar industry. From his early work with Tatuaje to his highly-rated My Father line, the Garcia family is now considered cigar royalty.  In fact, the brand is one of the few companies to have a cigar named as the #1 cigar of the year, and one of even fewer who has had the honor twice.

If you are new to the cigar community, or just new to the My Father brand, it can be a bit overwhelming to find the perfect cigar for you.  That is why we have added a list of top-notch My Father cigars to our ever-growing Buying Guide series.  Here, we will go through some of the best known My Father cigars and help you navigate the brand to find your perfect cigar.

My Father

In 2008, the Garcia family released a cigar that was going to change the family’s history, and the history of the modern cigar industry forever.  Pepin’s son, Jamie, blended a cigar to honor his Father.  He named the cigar, My Father.  Due to the success of the blend and subsequent projects, the company is now known as My Father.

The original My Father blend is quite strong and offers a ton of flavor.  The cigar is hand-rolled at the families esteemed factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.  It uses aged Nicaraguan tobacco for the filler and binder, followed by an oily and zesty Ecuadorian Habano Rosado wrapper.

Notes of pepper and leather combine with a slight touch of coffee and sweetness.  With its rich, complex flavor and flawless construction, this cigar was named one of the best of the year and is still a huge seller a decade later.

My Father Le Bijou 1922

Following the tremendous success of the original My Father, Don Pepin decided to continue the tradition, and in 2010 he blended a cigar to honor his own Father, Jose Garcia.

The Le Bijou 1922 translates to the jewel and 1922, which is the year in which Pepin’s Father was born. The Le Bijou took the company to another level and is one of the cigars that cemented the legacy of the Garcia family.

This cigar, which is blended and rolled in Nicaragua, uses vintage Nicaraguan tobaccos grown on the Garcia family farms for the filler and binder.  The wrapper is what sets this cigar apart. It is a dark and oily Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro wrapper.

Whereas the original release was known for its spice, the sequel is much darker, richer, and sweeter.  This incredible smoke was so well-received, it was named the #1 cigar of the year by Cigar Aficionado Magazine in 2015, five years after its release.

My Father Flor de Las Antilles

If the My Father Le Bijou put the Garcia family in the hall of fame, then the Flor de Las Antilles put them on Mount Rushmore.  When this cigar was first released, it was viewed as a top-notch cigar at a very solid price.

However, when it was named the #1 cigar of the year a few months later, it was sold out around the country for close to a year.  I have never seen one cigar have quite an impact on the retail industry as the Flor de Las Antilles.

The reason the cigar became so coveted and remained such a big seller is due to several characteristics.  First, it is a fantastic smoke.  It is a Nicaraguan puro that combines zesty pepper notes with hints of leather and nuts for a well-rounded and well-balanced profile.

Second, while most #1 cigars of the year have a pretty high price point, at the time of its release the Flor de Las Antilles retailed for under $7 per cigar.  That is an incredible price point for such an amazing cigar, and it remains immensely popular all these years later.

My Father El Centurion

I have said it before, and I will say it again, the El Centurion is the most underrated cigar in the My Father lineup.  While its sequel, the El Centurion H-2K-CT received more notoriety, I will always be of the opinion that the original is a top of the line smoke.  It is bold, complex, balanced, and was the first “limited edition” to be released by the Garcia family.

The El Centurion is hand-rolled using aged Nicaraguan tobaccos for the filler, binder, and wrapper.  The wrapper leaf, which is a sun-grown criollo 98, really shines in this blend offering up heavy notes of sweet-spice, nuts, and dark fruit.  The construction has always been incredible, and the aroma is rich and enticing.  This is a definite must-have for My Father fans.

My Father La Promesa

This is the newest release from My Father and continues their decades of success.  The La Promesa, which was released in the summer of 2019, was named after the promise Don Pepin made to make a better life for his family after leaving Cuba.

That is a promise he has fulfilled over decades of hard work, determination, and success.  This cigar perfectly exemplifies what it is to be a My Father cigar.  It combines incredible flavor, balance, construction, and aroma.

Hand-rolled in Nicaragua, La Promesa utilizes a special Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper.  This leaf offers up a combination of flavors perfect for an array of preferences.

Notes of dark fruits and rich sweetness are delivered with each puff, while a subtle spice is also present throughout.  La Promesa shows that even after years of creating top tier blends, the Garcia Family is better than ever.
